Why We Fight MS
Having multiple sclerosis means that you may suddenly have blurry vision. Or that your memory will fail you for no apparent reason. Or that you may not always be able to walk, let alone ride a bike. The symptoms of MS are different, and devastating, for everyone – the only certainty is that it will affect yet another person every hour of every day.
Why I Ride
My mother has MS. The symptoms started in her early twenties and have worsened greatly overtime. As a child I didn’t understand the difficulties she faced when performing simple tasks, such as walking to the mailbox, taking a shower, or making me breakfast. All I knew was that my mother was different and couldn’t do the things other mothers did. My mother wanted to work, but her poor memory, blurred eyesight, inability to stand, and crippled hands made that impossible. At the age of 59 my mother is now confined to a wheelchair and is afraid to boil water for fear of scolding herself.
Why do I ride? I ride for all those mothers fighting MS on a daily basis, struggling to raise their children the best way they can. I ride for those little boys who do not understand why mom can’t walk them to the bus stop. I ride so that one day the diagnosis of MS does not mean a life sentence of degrading physical and mental capabilities. So that one day I can be free of the fear that my children might be struck with this dreaded disease.
Why You Should Sponsor Me
On June 4th and 5th 2011, I will ride 150 miles with the “MS Bike Tour” – raising money to not only support research for a cure tomorrow, but also to provide programs which address the needs of people living with MS today. Please help make a difference by contributing a donation to the cause.
